LVA understands that to achieve the highest level of success, it is important to provide each adult student with quality literacy services in a supportive learning environment.
What Adult Literacy Services Does LVA Provide
LVA provides free literacy services to adults, 16 years and older, who need instruction in Basic Literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), English Conversation and Family Literacy. Those needing these services are:
• Adult students participating in Basic Literacy Programs who have been identified as reading below the 6th grade level and who need to improve their literacy skills (understand, read, write, speak and listen).
• Adult students participating in ESOL programs who have been identified as limited English Speakers and who need to improve their literacy skills (understand, read, write, speak and listen).
• Adult students participating in English Conversation programs who have been identified as limited English Speakers and who need to improve their literacy skills (understand, read, write, speak and listen) through active participation in an organized group setting.
• Adults (parents and guardians) and professional staff (teachers, support staff and administrators) participating in the Family Literacy program whose children have been identified as having learning difficulties (and whose parents may have the same difficulties).
NOTE 1: Literacy programs are non-traditional in that they are offered to adult students on a one-to-one, small group and large group basis in public settings or within the workplace.
NOTE 2: Literacy programs will be presented in a new and unique LVA CURRICULUM GUIDE utilizing learning themes, well defined Integrated English Language / Civics Education learning outcomes (focusing on the role of the worker, the family member and the citizen), and educational materials that support the attainment of these outcomes (including personal interests and goals).
NOTE 3: All adult students involved in these programs will have the opportunity to develop employment and life-coping skills, as well as a working knowledge of community resources available in the area.
LVA also provides staff development programs for professional teaching and support staff in public and private early childhood, elementary and secondary schools. These programs include training of staff to utilize instructional strategies and techniques for low, intermediate and high level adults identified with literacy needs.
